TItle: Health Monitoring of Trains, with Focus on Bogies

Abstract: This talk first introduces various health monitoring problems of high-speed trains. Then the emphasis is shifted to train bogies. Particular attention is given to two distinct problems: detecting hunting instability of train bogies (as rigid bodies) and identifying fatigue cracks of shafts as (as deformable bodies). Sensors and identification methods are described. Key challenges are discussed. Research on these two problems is largely based on the work conducted by the speaker’s research team. The talk also serves as a partial overview of health monitoring of train bogies.

Biography: Dr Ouyang received his PhD from Dalian University of Technology (DUT), China, in 1989. After working in DUT for 8 years, he moved to the UK. He had been a professor in the School of Engineering, University of Liverpool (UoL), from 2010 to 2023. He is now a distinguished professor in Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU). He has published over 300 journal papers, which have attracted well over 10,000 citations. His main research areas include structural dynamics and control, inverse dynamic analysis, vibration-based energy harvesting and solid mechanics.
