Title: Overview of Chinese Wind Power Industrial Development: Current Status, and Future Perspectives

Abstract: China's massive carbon emissions and air pollution concerns have led to embrace clean energy innovation as a means of transitioning to a more sustainable energy system. In this talk, we firstly introduce the state-of-the-arts of the wind power industry in China, and the opportunities for this emerging market both in onshore and offshore. Then, we address the challenges of whether China's wind energy industry has become an important source of clean energy technology innovation. In terms of wind capacity expansion, China has delivered enormous progress, increasing its wind capacity from virtually no wind capacity in the early 2000s up to the biggest one in the world. In terms of cost, China-based indigenous producers are continuously to remain important global players for the foreseeable future, however, further progress in reducing the cost of capital equipment may slow relative to the recent past due to China’s decision to abandon auctions in most provinces and move straight to subsidy-free onshore wind development after 2020, hitting the forecast in reshuffling the global value-chains and driving technology innovations to sustainably lower China's overall levelized cost of electricity in wind power sector as being competitive against the conventional power industries. Finally, some cutting-edge technologies based on the big-data system and AI prevailing in continuously improving and optimizing the offshore wind farm operating performance in life cycle are introduced, together with several pilot projects with the giant Giga-watt offshore wind turbine installed, showing some newly tailored technologies specifically for harsh and extreme environments, i.e., typhoon condition, implying a great potential offshore wind energy exploitation in China
